TIPS | Spring 2014 Makeup Trends

Hey everyone! I'm sorry for posting this late but I had labs all day yesterday and a presentation to prepare for one of my classes. Later that night, I had to help out at a PR event for a campus event going on next month and I didn't get back home until 10 T___T. I just crashed lol.

So anyway, as the title suggests, this is just a compilation of looks I've been seeing online from the runway. By all means, wear your make up however you see fit but if you're like me and need some inspiration and change in your everyday looks, read on!

Natural

As always, Springtime means putting away our heavier makeup and transitioning to lighter makeup. A big trend is going au naturel, focusing on a dewy, healthy skin and not much color makeup. Many of the models went with little to no makeup to showcase their flawless-looking skin. That's great and all but for those of us with a little bit problem areas we want to cover, I've got a few products that can "fake it 'til you make it". :)

Eyes

I have discolored eyelids so I always have to apply something to cover it up. I really like using eyelid primer for minor coverage or days when I don't feel like wearing makeup. It won't even up everything but it will even it up enough so that I'm more comfortable.
  • High End: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original and Eden
  • Affordable Option: Wet N Wild Fergie Eye Primer

To keep in line with the whole natural look, bare eyes makes more sense but I like to subtly contour my eyes with matte shadows to give them more definition. Shimmer shadows give a bit of luminosity to the eyes which helps brighten them and make up appear more awake.

Lips

This one was a bit  harder for me to pick as it depends on the pigmentation of your lips and your skin tone. For me, I tend to look for pinker colors as it helps me look more awake as my natural lip color is slight mauve-y. If you like the natural color your lips, adding a sheer or clear balm will be enough. Formulas with a slight shine will look more natural, rather than a slick shine or matte texture. Below, you'll find colors that work my light-medium, warm skin tones but I included a variety of opacities and shades that'll hopefully work for y'all too!

Face

Gone are the days of matte skin! Skin is kept very luminous but not to the point that it looks shiny. What I like to do is apply a sheer or light coverage foundation and then spot conceal in areas I need a bit more coverage to keep everything looking natural.
If you need a little bit of extra help in the luminosity department, highlighters are here to help! If you don't want to shell out for a new foundation, you can also mix a bit of a liquid highlighter into your foundation for that dewy finish.
  • High End Options: Benefit High Beam, Watts Up!Dandelion; Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal
  • Affordable Options: I don't have specific ones but a quick tip I have is using that shimmer eyeshadow that lacks in pigmentation as a highlighter instead! You could use a shimmery eyeshadow with more pigment but make sure you go lightly because you do not want to look overly shiny.
Blush was kept to a minimal but for us everyday girls, adding a bit of a flush can help make the complexion look a lot healthier. Cream blushes are the preferred formula, but for oily skinned people, a powder blushes with light reflecting particles can achieve a similar effect. If you don't want to shell out money for a cream blush, lipstick will work as well! Make sure to find one with a more emollient texture for better blending results. To find your perfect color, I'd look for colors that resemble your natural flush (pinch your cheeks a few times to get some color). Below are some of my recommendations based on my skintone but you can of course find other colors in the range to accommodate your needs!
  • High End Options: Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Love (Exclusive to the Clarisonic Aria Pack but don't hold me to it!); Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Dollface; Benefit Boxed Blush in Coralista
  • Affordable Options: Revlon PhotoReady Blush in 100 Pinched, Cream Blush in 18 Berry Flirtatious

Bold

There was no shortage of bold looks this season! Vibrant eyeshadow as well as graphic eyeliner framed the eyes of many a model. Orange lips were the dominant shade but I also noticed fire engine red and deep plums paired with neutral eyes.

Eyes

There were very many vibrant eye looks! I saw lime green, cobalt blue and many other colors on the runway. The trick to keep them wearable is to just apply it as a wash. You can also incorporate bright shadow to just on your lash line or in your inner corners.

I've also seen metallic (copperrust, and gold) and pastel (lilacsky bluebaby pink) eyes on the spring runway as well! While these aren't exactly following the natural trend described above, they are simple and effortless. I think the trick to keeping things simple is by applying a wash of a single all over the lids.
  • High End Options: Lorac Unzipped Palette, Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette, Sonia Kashuk Eye On Neutral Matte/Shimmer Palette (LE--Holiday 2013)

My favorite liners for making a bold, black line are Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper and Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Black. I remember liking Revlon Photoready Liquid Liner way back when it first launched but I haven't really tried any drugstore options since then.

Lips

The biggest trend seen in many runway shows was orange lips! It was super huge two years ago and it seems like it is making another big splash this season as well. As I was compiling this list, I noticed that I gravitate towards orange lip colors a lot lol. I have a lot of different options, from sheer to full coverage color payoff, formula-wise, and tones. Hopefully, you'll be able to find your match below!

A quick overview of all the orange (except for 2) lip colors I own :D

For other bold colors, I'll add them sometime over the weekend because I made such a huge mess looking for my orange colors and my roommate is coming home soon >___<

Face

I didn't really see any bold blush colors so the one you normally use or one that would complement your lips will do.

Since this look is very loud, you want your imperfections, like redness or spots, you be well covered up. A flawless canvas is necessary to pull off the bright eyeshadows and lips!

Foundations: Revlon ColorStay Foundation and Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous Foundation

Blemishes: Loreal True Match Concealer, Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer

Undereyes: Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Treatment Concealer; Skinfood Salmon Dark Circle Concealer

So this is the end of this post! It took me over 6 hours to get this blog post up (and I'm not even completely done) but I hope it's useful if you've been stuck in a makeup rut lately! I'm off to make dinner (as I've been working on this non-stop) and sleep as I have an 8AM lecture tomorrow >__<
