REVIEW | Garnier Fructis Hydra Recharge 1-Minute Moisture-Plenish Treatment

I'm on a hair care kick lately, if you hadn't already noticed. Since cutting my hair, I've been doing my best to keep to healthy and soft. I'm still using the same products as before I cut my hair--just in a different way. Today, I have the Garnier Fructis Hydra Recharge 1-Minute Moisture-Plenish up on the chopping block.

REVIEW | Garnier Fructis Hydra Recharge 1-Minute Moisture-Plenish Treatment, dry hair, static hair

--AT A GLANCE--
Formulated with goji berry, passion fruit, and kiwi, this treatment promises  to provide long lasting hydration without weighing your hair down in one minute. It is targeted at those with dry hair. This is the third step in the Garnier Fructis Hydra Recharge System after shampoo and conditioner.

--INGREDIENTS--

Water , Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate , Quaternium 87 , Stearyl Alcohol , Amodimethicone , Behentrimonium , Chloride , Cetyl Esters , Propylene Glycol , Phenoxyethanol , Fragrance , Candelilla Wax , Isopropyl Alcohol , Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract , Trideceth 6 , Triethanolamine , Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Water , Niacinamide , Pyridoxine HCI , Chlorhexidine Dihydrochloride , Citric Acid , Hexylcinnamal , Cetrimonium Chloride , Saccharum officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract , Benzyl Alcohol , Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract , 2 Oleamido 1,3 Ctadecanediol , Linalool , Passiflora Edulis Fruit Juice , Bisabolol , Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon Peel) Extract , Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract , Blue 1CI 42090 , Green 3CI 42053 , FIL D159107/2

--THE BREAKDOWN--
I apply it from ear level down to the ends and with whatever is left, run that through my roots. This gets used in place of a conditioner for me because I feel my hair would just get weighed down if I apply too many products to it.

I found mine at Walgreens at $5.99 USD for 8.5 oz but it's even cheaper at Walmart (though I don't shop there for ethical reasons). Calculating it using the Walmart price, it comes out to be $0.58 USD for 1 oz ($4.97 total).

--THE GOOD--
Even though it says to leave it in for 1 minute, I just put it in right after I shampoo and rinse out at the end of my shower (5 minutes or so). When I go to comb my hair, the comb goes straight through without tugging or snagging on my hair. When my hair dries, it doesn't get tangly as often and looks really shiny. It feels softer too.

I was looking for something that would reduce how staticky my hair was last, last winter. Adding moisture to my hair seemed like a good way to weigh the hair down. I'm not sure if that logic is sound but it did make the static in my hair go away.

I've had it for over a year now and the scent and potency hasn't been altered, at least, not to my eye and nose...

The scent is sweet and fruity, my favorite kind of scent for hair. The conditioner isn't too sweet that it's sickening and smells like apples. Most scents kind of disappear and my hair is left smelling meh, but I can still smell the conditioner after 9 hours since I showered. It doesn't give me a headache or anything so that's another bonus.

I like that the conditioner is packaged in a squeeze tube because it's easy to dispense and I can make sure that I get every last bit out.

--THE BAD--
One con is that if I use this daily, my hair does start to look oily and greasy so I don't recommend using it consecutively if you have oily and fine hair like me.

Looking at the ingredients list, amodimethicone is within the first 5 ingredients in the list. As I mentioned before, this silicone is really hard to remove from the hair and can cause product build up. There's also isopropyl alcohol in here, which is baffling since that is used as an antiseptic and is really drying, counterintuitive to what a hydration product is supposed to have. The "superfruit" threesome are actually listed so far down the list that there's not enough of it to do much of anything--the softness and silkiness of my hair is probably due to the quaternium-87 and amodimethicone than anything. THe other two ingredients in the first 5 (Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate and Steryl Alcohol) are just thickening agents so the conditioner isn't runny and doesn't actually do anything for your hair as far as I've found.

--BOTTOM LINE--
I don't think I would recommend this product. The star ingredients are high enough in quantity to do much for the hair. It's just noise marketing so that you feel like it's an awesome treatment when in reality, the ingredients that are creating this effect  aren't glamorous and may be harmful in the long run. There are better treatments out there and I'm going to keep looking for my perfect conditioner.

**Update 12.10.14** I have now used up the entire bottle and my thoughts have changed! My application method has changed. After I apply this to my shampooed hair, focusing on the hair from my ear-level downward, I coil my hair loosely at the top my my head and wear a shower cap. I then proceed to the rest of my shower. Right before I get out, I wash it out. My hair is so soft and manageable for the next two days in between washes. It doesn't tangle or get staticky. It really does work on my fine and straight hair. If I apply too much, I do get oily hair quickly but nothing dry shampoo can't tame. Would recommend now!
