REVIEW| It's Skin Cleansing Oil in Brightening

Cleansing oils have barely started gaining traction in the US but they have been very popular in Asia, especially the famous Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils. I decided to try the It's Skin Cleansing Oil in Brightening, which is a budget-friendlier version than the Shu Uemura. There's 3 formulas, each designed for a specific skin type: oily, combination, and dry. Brightening is the one recommended for combination skin. Read on to see how I feel about this cleansing oil!

[Review] It's Skin Cleansing Oil in Brightening

I first heard about this cleansing oil from Get It Beauty, a Korean beauty and makeup show. At first, I was a bit nervous to try it because I didn't think oils could properly cleanse my skin. However, I learned that makeup wipes don't do a good job of removing makeup and can cause long term damage from the strong alcohols and constant rubbing and tugging of the skin. Wanting to find a better alternative, I bit the bullet and bought the cleansing oil.

This cleansing oil contains mineral oil, strawberry, kiwi, peach, lemon, apple, and apricot extracts. It promises to gently cleanse skin of dead skin cells for a brighter effect.

Application

They recommend 3-4 pumps, but I use 2 and that's enough for me. I rub it all over my hands and then gently massage my face to remove my face makeup. If I'm particularly lazy that day, I will use my ring fingers to gently remove my eye makeup. After rubbing my face for about 2 minutes or so, I emulsify the oil by adding a little bit of water. I continue to massage my face for another minute before I rinse everything away. After that, I go in with another cleanser. They recommend a foaming cleanser afterwards for a double cleanse but any regular one will do. The cleansing oil comes in a blue bottle to differentiate it from the other formulas but the oil itself is a transparent yellow-y orange.

Likes

This product contains mineral oil, which is what gets the makeup off. Some say it is highly comedogenic, but I haven't broken out from using it. I have been using it for almost a year now but I haven't broken out any more than I normally do.

This also claims to brighten skin and I definitely do see that immediate effect. However, it isn't a long lasting effect as when I wake up in the morning, my skin doesn't look any brighter than usual.

I haven't had problems with the pump breaking or anything. I've travelled with this multiple times in my check in luggage and nothing has happened to it. There's a little plastic clip that you can attach to the pump dispenser itself to prevent things from pressing the dispenser and wasting product.

It is supposed to be a dupe of the Shu Uemura cleansing oil. I have not tried that one but this one is decent when it comes to removing makeup. It removes most of my makeup well.

As you can see, the oil itself removes a lot of the makeup, other than the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner and the Benetint. Once I added water to emulisfy, it got rid of the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. Benetint really stains but since I only use it on my lips, it doesn't really matter to me.

Dislikes

Even though it contains all those fruit extracts, it does not smell like any of those fruits. It smells like mineral oil, which bothered me at first, but now I'm used to the smell.

I was looking for an all in one makeup remover with this product. This product does a good job of removing my face makeup but it doesn't remove it completely. I usually do a double cleanse, using whatever cleanser I have lying around with my Clarisonic Aria. After the second cleanse, I see foundation that the Clarisonic removed from my face. Granted, it's less foundation on the brush compared to when I use makeup wipes but this cleansing oil doesn't completely remove foundation. For my eye makeup, it removes eyeshadow and concealer completely but when it comes to my waterproof eyeliner and waterproof mascara, it takes a bit more rubbing than I'm comfortable with to remove it. Regular mascara and eyeliner is fine but I usually wear waterproof versions. It also makes my vision a bit cloudy afterwards but I've heard that is typical of cleansing oils.

Bottom Line

I would recommend it. $12 for 150 mL compared to Shu Uemura's version at $38 for 150 mL is a steal. Sure, it doesn't completely remove makeup and you would need an extra eye makeup remover if you wear waterproof eye makeup, but if you are diligent about your skincare and do the double cleanse, it would be okay. Switching over from makeup wipes to cleansing oil would be a good idea as there is less waste and would be cheaper in the long run. Wipes usually come in a pack of 20-45 for anywhere from $4 to $30. I've had this same bottle for about 10 months now and I still have about a third of the bottle left (it expires in 12 months). I don't wear makeup every day, but I do wear makeup 3-4 out of 7 days, more if I'm going out on the weekends or something.

You can buy yours from koreadepart.com (like I did) or from Yesstyle.com. Yesstyle.com is selling theirs for $26 dollars but you get free shipping over $25 and it ships within 1-2 weeks. Shipping for koredepart.com depends where you live in the world. I think my shipping came out to be $12 (no free shipping even though I spent ~$100) and it took about 3-4 weeks to get to me.
