TIPS| 10 Steps to Summerproof Makeup! ☼

Welcome back to Makeup With a Heart♡ : Day 2! This time, I'm going to share some tips to help keep your makeup on your face, not your shirt. Though it is approaching the end of summer, these tips can be used year-round whenever you want your makeup to look good and last!

  1. Long-lasting makeup is all about the prep underneath! Exfoliate the night before and apply a hydrating cream the night before to get rid of any skin flakes and keep your skin hydrated. I love using the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment. It is on the pricier side but it works really well. It comes out a Hulk green color and has a medicinal scent but it was tolerable. It is not recommended for sensitive skin though. After using this, my skin looked more radiant, felt much softer the next morning, and my pores looked smaller!
  2. Wash your face with your favorite cleanser. This will ensure any residue from the night before will be swept away. Immediately follow up with a moisturizer that suits your skin needs; you don't want moisture to escape from your skin. Even oily skin needs moisture!
  3. -Optional- Apply an oil control product. This is especially important if you have oily skin or an oily T-zone. If not, move on to the next step!

  4. Apply your sunscreen! It should be applied in every season, not just summer. Sunscreen is vital because the sun's rays are very harmful. UVB is responsible for tanning and sunburns whereas UVA is a culprit in premature aging. Don't forget to bring it down your neck and on your ears if you are going to be outside! I highly recommend reading this post on the The Skin Cancer's Foundation's Guide to Sunscreens for detailed information.
  5. Prime your skin! This is very important because it will give your base makeup something to cling to. It will also prolong your makeup because it will prevent your natural oils from mixing with and breaking down your foundation. Primers can also help bring luminosity and cover dry patches on dry skin. Some primers are colored to correct redness, sallowness, and/or dullness! Others can help fill in enlarged pores, fine lines, and even blur wrinkles!

  6. Apply your base makeup in light layers. I highly recommend bb creams or powder foundations for oily skin for this purpose. They are lightweight yet offer sheer coverage which is good enough for day to day purposes. You can add concealer wherever you need a bit more coverage. If that isn't enough coverage for your purposes, apply foundation where you need it the most and leave the rest bare. Remember to set your base makeup with a setting powder to make it last! I like using Rimmel's Stay Matte Pressed Powder because it doesn't have any shimmers or glitters in it and if I'm in a rush, I don't like dealing with loose powders.

  7. Keep your eye makeup simple! I recommend using a primer underneath your shadows, whether they be powder or cream. Just remember to set your cream shadows with a coordinating color or a translucent powder. Make sure your eyeliner and mascara are waterproof and smudgeproof! Waterproof could still rub off and transfer (҂⌣̀_⌣́)ᕤ.
  8. Keep bronzer and/or blush to a minimum. Again, remember to set your cream products with some powder!
  9. For lips, I prefer to use lip stains or lip balms instead of lip gloss or lipstick. Lip gloss and lipstick tend to wear off a lot faster and you don't want it spreading everywhere. Lip stains have amazing staying power and are usually pigmented like a lipstick. They can be a little drying however, so adding a clear or matching lip balm on top will remedy that. Lip balms with SPF are a must in the summer. Just as you would put SPF all over your body and face, you must also protect your lips; they have a very thin skin and are most prone to the sun's harmful rays. If you still want to use lipstick, I recommend priming your lips with a lip primer or lining them with a lip liner all over your lips, applying the lipstick, blot with a tissue and then reapply for longevity. I don't encourage using lip gloss in the summers because they will trap the sun's rays and cause your lips to blister and other unsightly things to happen ⁀⊙﹏☉⁀
  10. Last step: Extend the life of your makeup by setting it with a makeup setting spray. Some people say that this step isn't helpful but for me, I definitely notice a difference when I use one compared to when I don't! I alternate between the Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray and the MAKE UP FOR EVER Mist & Fix . Do not use hairspray--most contain alcohol and that would dry up your face! ≧☉_☉≦ I don't recommend using products for purposes other than what they were designed to do (unless the ingredients are deemed safe for other parts of your body).

  11. Touch ups: If you're oily-skinned, I advise you to bring along oil blotting sheets. They won't disturb your makeup if you use patting motions. You can find them everywhere from drugstore to high end. I find that those that come from the drugstores work just as well as the high end at removing oil. Some high end blotting sheets contain ingredients that act as a treatment or skincare product but I feel that it might not be able to penetrate all the way down to your skin if you have makeup on. I'm currently using CVS Oil Absorbing Sheets* and while they do the job, they are a bit on the small side (approximately 1.5 inches/3.81 cm by 2.5 inches/6.35cm). Some people prefer to use powders but I feel that it might get cakey if that's all you're using; if you must, alternate powdering and blotting to avoid getting cake face (≧◡≦)
And that's a wrap folks! This was a super long post and I congratulate those who got through to the end with a double high-five! ٩(◠‿◠)۶ If you have any tips that you would like to share, please comment down below :)
