REVIEW | Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral-Matte/Shimmer Eye Palette (Limited Edition)

Hi everyone! I hope y'all are doing well. Today, I have a review on the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral-Matte/Shimmer Eye Palette (Limited Edition)**. It is a follow up to the popular Eye on Neutral Palettes released earlier this year. The palette is like the love baby of those two palettes, mixing up the shimmer and matte finishes.

This palette was a lot smaller than I thought. If it wasn't too clear from the picture, the palette is 4 inches (approximately 11 cm) long and 3 inches (approximately 7.5 cm) wide. Each eyeshadow pan is roughly the size of a dime. Nevertheless, it does contain 24 shadows in a variety of finishes and shades, providing a lot of versatility in such a small compact. All of the shades below are swatched without a primer underneath.

The shadows themselves are gorgeous! Just looking at them makes me swoon and feel butterflies in my stomach. There are lighter shades for highlighting, medium shades for blending, and darker shades for darkening your makeup. The variety of finishes also allows for different textures and interest. It is an even split, with 12 of the 24 shades being mattes and the other 12 being shimmers with varying degrees of shimmers. I find that the mattes were on the chalky side. The mattes have good color payoff on the eyes but the shimmers definitely pack a punch. They are so buttery feeling and I barely tap my brush in it a couple of times for the most amazing color payoff.

Shade 1 is a matte ivory color. It has really poor color payoff. I had to do two layers to get the color you see in the swatch above.

Shade 2 is a shimmery, warm brown with silver micro shimmers. It isn't as soft as the other shades but it has decent color payoff. This shade is nice for days when you don't want to wear a complicated eye look.

Shade 3 is a matte warm, milk chocolate brown. This makes a nice crease shade for medium light skin tones.

Shade 4 is a satin finish taupe with tiny silver micro shimmers. It is very, very buttery feeling and you don't need a lot to create a vibrant eye look.

Shade 5 is a pearly, cream shade that looks white on my skintone. The finish really reminds me of the sheen that white pearls have. It doesn't have the best pigmentation but it provides a nice sheen for that angelic look. It also works as a highlight for your cheekbones and such if you forget to pack that.

Shade 6 is a matte, fawn color. It's chalky feeling but it has pretty good pigmentation. I like using it for a super natural contour/crease color. I just have to be careful because it can look too warm/orange on my skin tone.

Shade 7 is a pearly, dark brown. The sheen isn't too noticeable and I use it for my crease or outer corners when I wear a matte lid to provide contrasting textures.

Shade 8 is a matte cool brown. Again, it has that chalky feel but it is quite pigmented.

Shade 9 is a matte, old lace color. It has okay color payoff. With some primer underneath, this shade stands out more.

Shade 10 is a metallic, warm gold. The softness of this shade leads it to have very good pigmentation. It provides a kind of foiled effect without the use of a mixing medium on the eyes. The gold is standout shade in this palette for sure. It reminds me a little of Half Baked from the Naked palette.

Shade 11 is a matte, neutral brown. It has good color payoff.

Shade 12 is a metallic, silvery, dark brown. This is another interesting shade. If you pack on the color, you get more of the dark chocolate brown color but if you sheer it out, you get more of a silvery shade with a hint of brown.

Halfway there everybody! Let's take a mini break...Just listened to Katy Perry's Dark Horse...is a nice song until the rap starts...not a big fan of rap.

I'm a bit of a derp, reversing the order of the shade swatches because I wasn't being very careful. The swatches on my arm go from left to right and that corresponds to the bottom to top, so the leftmost shade is the bottom most shade of the palette according to the full picture of the palette above.

Now that I have cleared up the confusion a little, let's talk about the shades!

Shade 13 is a matte, medium gray color. I haven't used this shade on my eyes because I'm not a fan of gray eyeshadows. It has decent pigmentation when swatched.

Shade 14 is a shimmery, bronze color. This shade has the same texture as shades 10 and 12. Great pigmentation and feel :)

Shade  15 is a matte camel color. This gives a very natural looking contour. I like using it in my crease for a super natural eye look. I've been wearing an angelic eye look lately (at least, what I think angels would wear if they wore makeup) and this shade and shade with shades 1, 5, or 16 on the lid makes a very nice, innocent look.

Shade 16, is a shimmery, seashell shade. Applied sheerly, it gives a wet appearance to your eyes. When packing on the color, it doesn't really come off with a pink undertone but more of a ivory color on my medium light skin tone. Again, this shade has the same buttery soft texture as shades 10, 12, and 14. Amazing pigmentation as well--I have to make sure I don't pick up too much or else I get a very strong highlight color. This reminds me of Sin or Sidecar from the Naked palette (I don't have one but from what I remember from using my cousin's Naked Palette, they're pretty similar).

Shade 17 is a shimmery, gray black shade. It also has that buttery soft textures like shades 10, 12, 14, and 16. The pigmentation is incredible on this shade as well.

Shade 18 is a matte dark brown. It has very good color payoff.

Shade 19 is a metallic, golden bronze. Same texture as shades 10, 12, 14, 16 and 17.

Shade 20 is a matte linen shade. This is an anomaly in the matte shades included in this palette as it has quite a soft, buttery texture. Very nice pigmentation and actually shows up without much effort on my medium light skin tone.

We're approaching the end here folks--4 more!

Shade 21 is a matte black. Has the texture of charcoal but has pretty amazing pigmentation. I don't really use many black eyeshadows but for my purposes, I have to be quite careful not to get too much on my brush. Be a bit careful because this shade does have a bit of fallout. Definitely stained my hands when I was swatching it.

Shade 22 is metallic taupe eyeshadow. I sound like a broken record by now, but it has the same texture as 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, and 19.

Shade 23 is a matte Chamoisee shade. This is a nice crease shade. When I do a darker eye with black or dark gray shadow, I like using this as my transition shade to warm up the eye.

Last but not least, shade 24 is a light bronze color. It really reminds of the Light Bronze eyeshadow in the Lorac Pro Palette.

Just to recap, since this is a longer post with so many things going on,

  • The palette is small and contains a decently sized mirror, making it perfect for travelling. The hinges actually stay so if you prop it on something high, you don't need o hold up the mirror.
  • To add on to the travelling bit, it contains 24 eyeshadows, half of which are matte. You can create an endless number of looks using this palette and looking at it sometimes overwhelms me like a deer stuck in headlights with the dazzling array of neutral colors. Some of the shades are reminiscent of the Naked Palettes and the Lorac Pro Palette so if you don't want to shell out for all those palettes, picking this up, especially with the sale going on right now, would be a great alternative.
  • I didn't have any problem with pigmentation on these shades. The lighter ones did need some primer to show up on my skin tone but I always wear an eyeshadow primer underneath anyway (darn oily eyelids!).
  • The pale yellow plastic packaging is simple and the Sonia Kashuk logo in gold has rubbed off a bit from use. The closure is one thing that I didn't like as it is really tight and when I try to open the palette, my nail polish chips off. At least I know this palette won't open randomly in my bag and get all over the place--especially since most of the shades are very soft and buttery.

So here's an eye look I created. It looks a lot more dramatic in real life but I took the pictures in my bathroom at night (best idea ever--not)
For the photo above, I used shade 24 all over my lid, shade 3 in my crease, shade 14 in my outer corners and halfway on my lower lashline, and shade 16 on the inner corners and inner lashline.

Bottom Line:

I really, really like this palette. My sister got it for me for Christmas (Thanks sis!) and I've been using it quite a bit. I had contemplated whether or not I should get it but am glad my sister got it for me in the end. I saw it at my local Target recently for $14.99-ish and I would grab it up at that price, not the original $30.

MWAH Musings ♥

  • My family is having a bbq today--can't wait to start grilling!
  • My brother left to pick up some corn for the grill and still hasn't come back yet T___T
  • Spring Break is over soon! I'm so sad...don't want to go back to school >___<

And that's a wrap folks! That was a lot of eyeshadow to go through and I'm very happy if you made it all the way to the bottom of this post. If you have any further questions about this palette, don't hesitate to ask me down below.
