REVIEW | Tarte Color Your World With Shades of Clay June 2014 (2nd Installment)

Let me preface by saying Tarte is one of my most favorite brands. The attention to cruelty free and natural ingredients really makes it stand out as an Earth-conscious brand. The Tarte Color Your World with Shades of Clay Collection is part of a 3 piece set from QVC that was available for auto-ship a couple of months ago. As far as I'm aware, the items in this kit, like the foundation, eyeliner, and blush are exclusive to this kit. The primer, finishing powder, lip gloss, and mascara are part of their current line up.

--THE FACE PRODUCTS--

As the weather heats up in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm looking for lightweight products that naturally enhance my face. I get quite oily in the summer and the CC Primer contains kaolin, doing an okay job at mattifying my face. I apply it in war paint stripes all over my face and blend it in with my e.l.f. Powder Brush. The stick is divided up into quadrants with one each being green and purple and two being the skin tone shade. There's some method to this madness which is that the green is supposed to cancel out redness, the purple is to cancel out any yellow tones and brighten the skin, and the skin tone shade is to provide some coverage and even out other skin imperfections. There's not much coverage or anything but it does even out my complexion, blurs my acne hyperpigmentation marks, and pores and tones down the redness around my nose and cheeks. When I swipe it along my face, the colors kind of mix all together. I haven't tried using a brush and picking up individual colors to target specific spots on my face but this is supposed to be an easy product to work with. This would be a nice product to carry around and reapply throughout the day to keep the oil at bay but make sure you bring your SPF, especially if you're going to be outside! My complaint with this is that the actual product doesn't seem to be securely attached to the base. The first stick I got actually fell out of its packaging. This stick hasn't fallen out but it rattles when I shake it side to side. Make sure you push it down so it doesn't fall out.

I have it in the shade Light which is a bit too pale for my face but it isn't noticeable. I got the first set in Medium but that was a couple of shades to dark for my (Winter at the time) skin tone. I tried Medium again a couple of days and it's still too dark. We are just heading into Summer here so there's still time for my face to tan but I'm not holding my breath.

Concealer -- Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer (under eye only)
Eyebrows -- e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit in Medium
Inner Rim Eyeliner -- Tarte Pencil Liner in Nude
Eyeshadow Primer -- clean slate 360 creaseless 12-hour smoothing eye primer
Eyeshadow -- Tarte Aqualillies Palette and Lorac Pro 2 Palette
The Liquid Foundation is quite good too. Worn alone, it falls into my enormous pores which is a no-no but if I wear it over the CC Primer, it applies smoothly over my problematic pores. I have a breakout right now on my chin but it doesn't look dry or cakey on my dried out zits, which is a big plus. The coverage is definitely buildable depending on how much I pick up with my brush. With one thin layer, I get medium coverage and it doesn't feel heavy. When I try to add another layer, that's when it starts to feel mask-like and heavy. To cover any imperfections that show through, namely my acne hyperpigmentation marks, I use a separate concealer. True to its satin finish claim, my skin looks radiant but not oily upon application. In two or three hours however, I definitely feel oily to the touch and need to blot. With the foundation and primer combo, I need to blot after 4 hours, which is average for me. Coverage and longevity on this foundation is great--by the end of the day (around 6-8 hours), no redness, dark circles, or hyperpigmentation spots show through and when I use a makeup wipe (bad I know!), a lot of foundation comes off. My blush and bronzer also look really great and I don't need to touch those up throughout the day at all.

My major complaint I have is that the opening of the foundation is quite small so when I use my e.l.f. Powder Brush to get product, the foundation goes all over the opening and looks dirty. Haven't tried pouring it out but I think that would make a bigger mess but at least the mesh covering the opening keeps foundation from spilling all over the place. Regardless, I don't think this would be a good foundation for travel as the jar packaging is quite bulky for how much product it contains. Another issue is that I don't think it's that sanitary to keep sticking my brush directly into the product as that could spread germs. I make sure to use a clean brush every time I apply but sometimes I don't pick up enough product the first time and have to double dip--gives my slightly germaphobic nature the heebie jeebies. The jar top is pretty and reminds me of the inside shell of an oyster, which I love eating in the summer with some Tabasco and lemon *drools*.

Food cravings aside, the Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder is a godsend! I have a tiny sample that I never used until recently on my last trip home. Getting a full size is great and I'm glad that they included it with this set as the foundation really needs some help finishing off as it doesn't ever really set. I like loose powders because they do a better job of mattifying my face and getting rid of the sticky feeling of my base products. It's a bit messy when I unscrew the top and shake out some product but that's with every loose powder I've tried so far. If you have any tips for a mess-free application process, let me know cuz your girl here and her table really need some help. Nothing much to say other than that it gives me a truly matte finish without looking cakey.

Multitasking products are always interesting to me. The Amazonian Color Clay Bronzer Blush in Peach Bronze however, fails at both. It isn't pigmented at all and comes off more shimmery than I'd like. I get more shimmer than color sometimes and I have to build it up to see decent color. However, the formula on this version is much better than Pink Bronze; it's less chalky and hard. It is in a slightly bulkier packaging than Pink Bronze but the magnetic closure gets a thumbs up with me (snap closures usually ruin my manicure).  Color-wise, this does show up peach rather than bronze on my cheeks. I don't really get a bronze color but the golden sheen works as a highlighter. This is nice for the no-makeup makeup look as it's quite sheer. At least the packaging and imprint is pretty but it isn't as nice as the one that Pink Bronze came in (though I've heard the padded top will come off with use--I'll just have to be quite gentle).

--THE EYE PRODUCTS--

Eyeliner is always a struggle for me. I don't have problems with application but with my hooded and oily eyelids, getting it to stay put for more than 4 hours takes some effort. The Amazonian Colored Clay Eyeliner in Espresso is one of the few eyeliners that stay put on me. My HG eyeliner is the MUFE Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil and this one is just as good--a little bit better actually. It lasts all day for me and looks just as intense as when I first put it on, which is a rarity for me. In the upper tightline, it lasts just as long as the MUFE at 6 hours without smudging all over the place.  Where I think it's better than the MUFE is that it is very creamy and pigmented--I can get a perfect line in just one pass. The twist-up pencil design is also very handy as I don't have to find a sharpener when the tip gets dull and I feel as if I'm not wasting product by shaving it off. I'm not sure how much this will retail for (which is usually the deal breaker for me) but the MUFE has 4 times as much product for $19 USD. I also have the black one that came in the December shipment but as I don't like to wear black eyeliner, it's been sitting untouched in my makeup-to-give-away pile.

I can never get enough mascara. I'm always looking for the best mascara as I feel like mascara makes you look so much better. I don't like having too many tubes open at the same time, even though I have 4 open and in rotation, so I never got around to testing the 4-in-1 Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara until now. Most mascaras claim to do it all but never really deliver on more than 2 of these claims, if any. I prioritize  It really does lengthen and volumize  my lashes without clumps or the spidery look. It does help my lashes hold the curl from my lash curler but I don't think it curls my lashes on its own. I can't speak too much on the conditioning claim but my lashes don't feel stiff or hairsprayed on like some other mascaras. I'm happy that it delivers on the other 3 claims as that's what a mascara should do. This mascara isn't waterproof so I do get smudges on my outer corners after 4 hours but it's nowhere as bad as the smudges I got from the Maybelline The Falsies  Volume Express, which is one of the few non-waterproof mascaras I've used. It comes off easily but not as easily as the Lancome Hypnose Drama (my HG mascara) with the Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover and I don't have too much trouble getting it off with the It's Skin Cleansing Oil either. The price tag on this is better than my HG mascara but the smudging is is something I can't tolerate.

--THE LIP PRODUCT--

Finally, we have the Lipsurgence Lip Gloss in Flushed. Recently, I've been giving lip gloss a try and have been liking them so far. The bright pink shade just screams summer to me and I was quite excited to try it out. However, the sheerness is disappointing. It just slightly tints my lips a milky pink shade with my natural lip color showing through considerably. I'm not particularly fond of my natural lip color and like more pigmented products. Lasting power is so-so--a little over 2 hours before the color fades with just light drinking. The moisture does stick around for another 3 hours or so. The applicator is quite cute with the little divot to cup your lips nicely. I didn't have trouble sticking to the inside of my lip line. It didn't really move all over the place either. The scent is the typical sweet vanilla scent.

--BOTTOM LINE--

Out of all the products I got, I'd only recommend the Amazonian Colored Clay Eyeliner in Espresso, which is ironic since you can't get it from any online retailer yet. It lasts well, is pigmented, and is easy to apply. The dark brown color is perfect for my day time makeup looks and transitions into nighttime with nary a problem. There's not much that this is lacking but I would want to see how much it's going to cost before I name this my HG.

I like the Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder is on the expensive side but I need so little each time to set my face and it gives me a completely matte finish without looking cakey unlike so many other powders. It does help my foundation last about an hour longer than if I use a different powder but I haven't tested it with all of my foundations yet (it could be just that the Amazonian Colored Clay Liquid Foundation doesn't have very good oil controlling properties). I don't know if I'd necessarily repurchase as the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is $35 USD for 1 oz and it is quite popular among Youtubers. The 4-in-1 Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara is great other than the smudging issue. I would repurchase this maybe in the Fall and Autumn when I'm less sweaty and oily as I think it makes the mascara not last as long. When I spend the day indoors, there's no smudging.

I'd pass on the Colored Clay CC Primer. The primer is good at filling in pores and giving a bit of coverage but the Stila Perfect & Correct Foundation does the same thing and more for $44USD for 1 oz. The convenient glue stick format is quite nice and easy but trying to blend it with my fingertips is a hassle. The Amazonian Colored Clay Liquid Foundation has buildable coverage but being a combination skin type, the oily areas of my face get too oily and the constant blotting and powdering is annoying at best. The packaging is a bit inconvenient and the double dipping makes me shudder. The limited shade ranges for the Primer and Foundation is quite annoying as I fall somewhere in between Light and Medium. Maybe when they make their official debut, more colors will be launched. The Amazonian Color Clay Bronzer Blush in Peach Bronze is better than the one in the December shipment but still nowhere as pigmented as my favorite Instain blushes but then again, not much rivals Instain in terms of pigmentation. The sheerness is nice for fair skin tones, those with a heavy hand (guilty!), or beginners, but I much prefer a product with more pigment. The Lipsurgence Lip Gloss in Flushed is just not what I'm looking for in a lip product so I won't be buying more.

The coral bag is my biggest makeup bag and I like using it when I travel. The large size means I can fit a whole lot more product in it. The material is easy to clean but the thinness of the bag makes me worried for how durable it would be. Nevertheless, it's a nice touch to hold all of the makeup in this kit.
XOXO,
MWAH ♥
