BEAUTY HACK┊ DIY Foundation or Color Correct a too Pink Foundation!

Ignore the gash in the Skin Food bottle...was trying to get product out since I couldn't squeeze any more product out of it >.<

Tired of buying bottle after bottle of foundation that gives a mask-like appearance? Interested in making your own? Read on to find out how!

Finding a foundation that not only caters to your skin needs but also skin tone AND undertone is very rare, especially for those of us who are very pale or very dark. Luckily for me, I'm somewhere in the middle of the spectrum but finding a foundation with yellow undertones without too much red is a difficult find. Take for example this Yes to Grapefruit CC Cream I bought in Medium. I could've returned it for Light but it was past the return/exchange date. Instead of tossing it out, I decided to make it work for me. It has too much of a red undertone so I took some liberties to make it match my tone better!

⇥STEPS⇤

  • Grab your mismatched bottle of foundation/tinted moisturizer. Check to see what it makes your face look like. If it looks too red/pink, you're going to need a green pigment. If it's too yellow/orange, you're going to need a red pigment to counteract the yellowness of the foundation. If it looks too ashy, you're going to need a darkening pigment. If it's too dark, you're going to need a white pigment or liquid. Here, I'm working with the Yes to Grapefruit CC Cream in Medium.
  • This step is completely optional. I added a sunscreen because I wanted this to be a two-in-one product for rushed mornings (which is every morning with me, it seems...) I used the Skinfood Gold Kiwi No Sebum Sun Matte SPF 35 PA+++ because I hate the texture on its own. It gives the DIY foundation a great, truly matte texture (that can look a little flat and weird but I remedy that with some strategically placed highlighter--using up even more of my products. Win-win!) This sunscreen did lighten the CC cream a bit but didn't correct the undertone.
  • Add your pigment! I couldn't find any pigments but I had some yellow green eyeshadows that I never thought I would use. The one in my formula is the NYX Hot Singles Eyeshadow in Psychedelic. I was going for a matte texture and used a matte formula. If you want a more dewy formula, adding a satin finish eyeshadow would add a glow to the foundation.
  • I basically just mixed all of that together in a little jar I found on Amazon. I don't have exact measurements since I just added more of whatever it was lacking until I got a good match.
  • Some tips: If you're using an eyeshadow, make sure to completely crumble the eyeshadow into powder as it will mix better. I had random clumps of green over certain parts of my face from being careless...A green liquid might be better since the foundation is more liquid (dissolving like with like is compatible but work with what ya got!) Adding a color correcting primer might work but I just thought it was more expensive to do that. If you do go that route, make sure that the first ingredients of your primer and the foundation match ie, water and water, or silicone and silicone. You wouldn't want the foundation to ball up or get patchy when you apply it to your face!

⇥COVERAGE TEST⇤

As you can see, I have some blemishes on my cheeks and chin area, with some redness as well. The tinted moisturizer matches me a lot better in the after picture. Since it's just a tinted moisturizer, you can still see some of the redness peeking through on my chin and nose. For everyday, I'm okay with the level of redness this provides. The original CC cream was a little too dewy for my taste so adding the matte sunscreen really gives me my preferred finish. I got a bit shiny after about 4 hours in a hot climate so that's pretty good for me. It did change the texture of the CC cream--it went from liquid to a whipped mousse texture, which can leave streak marks if I don't blend well. However, the thicker texture makes me feel like I'm getting more protection on my face. I forgot to include a picture of the CC cream before I mixed everything up but I'll add one when I have time :D
